In 1996, the Czarnecki Family converted what had been an abandoned home for over 20 years into the fine-dining restaurant it is today. The Kitchen Wing was added, heat at AC were installed, electrical wiring was upgraded, and the entire building’s foundation was replaced. Our family business took shape in 1916 when Joseph Czarnecki, the great-grandfather of our current chef-proprietor Christopher Czarnecki, opened Joe’s Tavern in Reading, Pennsylvania. The simple menu catered primarily to Joseph’s fellow Polish immigrants and featured bowls of wild mushroom soup for 20 cents. “Our wine list is exclusively Oregon because we want to offer a broad selection of the old, the new, from the northern Willamette to the south,” Chris said. “We want to show the diversity that our area has to offer, including producers whose wines aren’t available out of the state.

The original section became the rear ell, or wing, when a two-story, end-gabled section in the Classical Revival style was added to it in the 1860s. The original front entrance, with its distinctive classical framement and multi-pane sidelights, remains largely intact today. According to tradition, the single-story front porch was replaced in 1911 with the grand, two-story portico we see today. This temple-fronted porch with its slender, classical columns reflects the taste of the early 1910s for American Colonial architecture that came to be called the Colonial Revival.
